Toronto Maple Leafs majú nového kapitána. Stal sa ním hviezdny útočník Auston Matthews. Američan nahradí na poste kapitána Johna Tavaresa a stane sa tak 26. kapitánom v histórii klubu. Matthews je zároveň prvým americkým hráčom v tejto úlohe.
Podľa informácií bol Tavares do rozhodnutia o výbere nového kapitána zapojený a zmenu podporuje. Obaja hráči sa zúčastnia stredajšej tlačovej konferencie, kde by malo prísť oficiálne oznámenie klubu.
Dvadsaťšesťročný Matthews bol v minulej sezóne najlepším strelcom NHL s 69 gólmi. Celkovo nazbieral 107 bodov (38 asistencií) v 81 zápasoch.
Trojnásobný držiteľ Maurice Richard Trophy (ktorá sa každoročne udeľuje hráčovi NHL s najvyšším počtom gólov v základnej časti) nazbieral v osemročnej kariére v NHL, ktorú strávil výlučne v Toronte, 649 bodov (368 gólov, 281 asistencií). V sezóne 2021/2022 získal Hart Trophy pre najužitočnejšieho hráča ligy, keď strelil 60 gólov a pridal 46 asistencií.
Toronto si Matthewsa vybralo ako celkovú jednotku draftu 2016.
Tavares (33) bol kapitánom Maple Leafs od októbra 2019. V Toronte odohral posledných šesť sezón a v uplynulom ročníku získal 65 bodov (29+36) v 80 zápasoch.
Pred 16. sezónou v NHL má Tavares na konte 456 gólov a 584 asistencií v 1109 zápasoch za New York Islanders (2009-2018) a Toronto (2018-2024). Rovnako ako Matthews, aj Tavares sa stal jednotkou draftu. Islanders si vybrali Tavaresa v roku 2009.
