Timo Meier ukončil svoj štvorročný kontrakt na 24 miliónov dolárov a v sobotu sa mal stať obmedzeným voľným hráčom. Dvadsaťšesť ročný švajčiarsky krídeľník podpísal nový lukratívny kontrakt s tímom New Jersey Devils na 8 rokov v hodnote 8,8M ročne.
Devils si upevnili svoje útočné jadro, keď si Meiera, Jacka Hughesa, Jespera Bratta, Nica Hischiera a Ondřeja Paláta poistili minimálne do sezóny 2026/2027. Meier zaznamenal v sezóne 2022/2023 v 78 zápasoch rozdelených medzi tímy New Jersey Devils a San José Sharks 40 gólov a 66 kanadských bodov.
Devils pôvodne získali Meiera od Sharks v uzávierke výmen v roku 2023 spolu so Scottom Harringtonom, Timurom Ibragimovom, Zacharym Emondom, Santerim Hatakaaom a výberom v piatom kole draftu 2024 výmenou za Shakira Mukhamadullina, Andreasa Johnssona, Fabiana Zetterlunda, Nikitu Okhotyuka, výber v prvom kole draftu 2023, podmienený výber v prvom kole draftu 2024 a výber v siedmom kole draftu 2024.
Po tom, čo Meier pred výmenou nazbieral v 57 zápasoch v tíme Sharks 31 gólov a 52 bodov, po uzávierke zaznamenal v 21 zápasoch 9 gólov a 14 kanadských bodov. V play-off švajčiarsky útočník pridal dva góly a dve asistencie v 11 zápasoch, pričom bojoval so zranením v hornej časti tela.
Meier dokázal ako „žralok“ vo svojej kariére trikrát prekonať métu 30-tich gólov. Počas 472 zápasov v kariére v priebehu siedmich sezón NHL v dresoch San José Sharks a New Jersey Devils zaznamenal163 gólov a 330 bodov. V play-off odohral 46 zápasov s bilanciou 9 gólov a 15 asistencií.
„Diabli“ ukončili sezónu 2022/2023 s bilanciou 52-22-8 a 112 bodmi v 82 zápasoch, čo stačilo na druhé miesto v Metropolitnej divízii a tretie v National Hockey League. V druhom kole play-off Stanleyho pohára 2023 ich v piatich zápasoch vyradila Carolina Hurricanes.
