Vedenie klubu Anaheim Ducks oznámilo, že Greg Cronin bol odvolaný z pozície hlavného trénera. Jeho nástupca zatiaľ nebol menovaný. Cronin pôsobil dve sezóny na lavičke Ducks, keď 4. júna 2023 nahradil Dallasa Eakinsa.
Ducks ukončili sezónu s bilanciou 35 výhier, 37 prehier a 10 prehier po predĺžení, čo im nestačilo na postup do play-off NHL už siedmy rok po sebe. V Pacifickej divízii obsadili šieste miesto a za druhou divokou kartou v Západnej konferencii, ktorú získali St. Louis Blues, zaostali o 16 bodov. Definitívne boli vyradení z boja o vyraďovaciu fázu po prehre 1:4 s Calgary Flames 3. apríla.
„Chcem osobne poďakovať Gregovi za jeho neúnavnú prácu a oddanosť tímu,“ vyhlásil generálny manažér Ducks Pat Verbeek. „Má veľkú zásluhu na napredovaní našej mladej jadrovej skupiny. Napriek tomu som po niekoľkých týždňoch dôkladného zvažovania dospel k záveru, že potrebujeme novú cestu a nový hlas. Bolo to pre mňa nesmierne ťažké rozhodnutie, ale považoval som ho za nevyhnutné, aby sme pokračovali v napredovaní smerom k tímu, ktorý môže reálne bojovať o Stanley Cup.“
Aj keď sa Ducks do play-off opäť nepozreli, zaznamenali výrazné zlepšenie. So ziskom 80 bodov si polepšili o 21 bodov v porovnaní so sezónou 2023/2024.
„Aj keď je to dnes sklamanie, v širšom pohľade sme urobili krok správnym smerom,“ povedal kapitán tímu Radko Gudas po poslednom zápase. „Vidíte na tých mladých hráčoch, že sa chcú zlepšovať v každom jednom stretnutí. Samozrejme, že sezóna nebola úspešná, keďže sme nepostúpili, ale verím, že ak udržíme tento káder pokope, budúcnosť bude svetlá.“
Cronin ukončil svoje pôsobenie v Anaheim Ducks s bilanciou 62-87-15. Ide o jeho prvé pôsobenie v NHL ako hlavný tréner. Predtým strávil päť sezón ako kouč tímu Colorado Eagles v AHL a medzi rokmi 2003 až 2005 viedol farmársky tím New York Islanders v Bridgeporte. V tejto sezóne sa stal už šiestym prepusteným trénerom v NHL – pred ním skončili aj Jim Montgomery (Boston Bruins), Drew Bannister (St. Louis Blues), Luke Richardson (Chicago Blackhawks), Derek Lalonde (Detroit Red Wings) a John Tortorella (Philadelphia Flyers). Osud Cronina tak spečatil ďalší neúspešný ročník, ktorý však zároveň priniesol nádej na lepšie časy pre klub z Kalifornie.
