Po třech letech strávených v zámoří se dvaadvacetiletý rodák z Veselí nad Lužnicí, nadějný útočník Pavel Novák rozhodl pro návrat do Čech. Nově se stává hráčem Českých Budějovic.
Ještě před několika týdny visela ve vzduchu naděje, že by se český mladík mohl uchytit v zámoří. Zúčastnil se předsezónního kempu Minnesoty Wild, i kempu jejího farmářského kádru Iowa Wild. Právě tam dostával tolik potřebný prostor. Hrál v prvních dvou lajnách, chodil na přesilovky.
Nakonec to však nevyšlo.
„Sám jsem cítil, že bych farmu mohl udělat. Pak se to ale za dva tři dny obrátilo a najednou jsem byl dole. Moc jsem tomu nerozuměl. Neřekl bych, že se mi nedařilo. Cítil jsem se dobře, ale trošku mi chyběly body, kterých jsem moc neudělal,“ konstatoval smířeně. Zároveň poděkoval za možnost zabojovat o svou šanci a potvrdil, že svůj sen o NHL tímto rozhodně nevzdává.
Zkrátka si jen vybral tým, který o něj momentálně stojí.
V roce 2018 to s dorostem Motoru dotáhl až k titulu. O sezónu později, ve věku sedmnácti let a pěti dní, vstřelil v baráži svůj první extraligový gól. Odehrál také několik utkání za českou reprezentaci a na draftu NHL si ho pod svá křídla vzala ze 146. místa Minnesota.
Po skvělé sezóně 2021/22, kdy za kanadský tým Kelowna Rockets nasbíral dvaasedmdesát bodů v devětašedesáti duelech, ho však v rozletu zastavil jeho zdravotní stav, konkrétně rakovina lymfatické tkáně, známá také jako Hodgkinův lymfom. Ročník 2022/23 proto musel kvůli léčbě zcela vynechat.
A i když se poté vytrvale pokoušel prorazit alespoň v AHL, nepodařilo se, a tak se nakonec rozhodl pro návrat domů.
„S trenéry Motoru jsme byli pořád v kontaktu, a když jsem byl na začátku sezony poslán do nižší ECHL, tak jsem přemýšlel, co dál. Cítil jsem, že trenéři v Budějovicích i manažer Jirka Novotný o mě mají zájem, tak jsme to probrali, domluvili se a teď jsem tady,“ popsal celou situaci Novák.
Zda se českému mladíkovi bude dařit na domácí půdě více než za oceánem se dozvíme již brzy. První zápas by měl odehrát během pátečního večera proti hokejistům Olomouce.
