Adam Ružička sa na začiatku minulej sezóny NHL chopil svojej príležitosti. Po vydarenom kempe Calgary Flames dostal šancu v prvom tíme, a aj vďaka zraneniu Huberdeaua sa vyšvihol až do prvej formácie. Vďaka tomu nazbieral v prvých 30 zápasoch 20 bodov.
24-ročný center, ktorý však v NHL nastupoval v minulej sezóne na poste krídelníka, prežil naozaj sezónu ako na hojdačke. Z kempu sa postupne vytiahol na stálicu prvej formácie, avšak zlom prišiel po Vianociach. Tam sa do zostavy vrátil Jonathan Huberdeau a tréner Darryl Sutter ho preradil do štvrtej formácie.
Odvtedy Ružička odohral len 14 zápasov bez zisku jediného bodu a veľakrát sa ocitol aj na tribúne. To ho samozrejme poznačilo aj po psychickej stránke. Pre tento moment však Ružička tvrdí, že už celú situáciu z minulej sezóny nevníma a sústreďuje sa primárne na letnú prípravu a na začiatok nasledujúcej sezóny.
„V hlave mi bežali rozličné myšlienky, bolo to divoké. Ako som vždy hovoril, šiel som deň po dni. Snažil som sa byť pozitívny, aj keď to bolo ťažké. Veril som, že príde zmena, ktorá napokon neprišla. Už to je však za mnou, sústredím sa na leto a kemp.“

Vzhľadom na jeho vydarenú sériu zápasov, kedy nastupoval v prvom útoku, dúfa aj vo viac priestoru na ľade.
„S novým trénerom a generálnym manažérom to pôjde dobrým smerom. Dúfam, že dostanem viac priestoru, podobne, ako na začiatku poslednej sezóny.“

V máji tohto roka sa taktiež konali majstrovstvá sveta v ľadovom hokeji, na ktorých sa Ružička nezúčastnil aj napriek tomu, že nádej na jeho účasť bola až do posledných chvíľ. Mnoho fanúšikov si vtedy kládlo otázku, či neprišiel len preto, že necestoval Martin Fehérváry. Tieto špekulácie sa vynorili najmä kvôli ich veľmi blízkemu vzťahu.
„Necítil som sa dobre psychicky, ani fyzicky. Mal som menšie zranenia, ktoré by som nerád špecifikoval. Potreboval som sa dať dokopy fyzicky, aj mentálne. Čaká ma boj o nový kontrakt, chcem byť na to pripravený čo najlepšie.“

Ohľadom budúcej sezóny sa Ružička vyjadriť zatiaľ nevedel, avšak podotkol, že majstrovstvá sveta v Česku sú veľkou motiváciou na to ísť reprezentovať Slovensko. Podľa jeho slov je to v podstate domáci šampionát.
