Matthew Tkachuk sa po viac než dvojmesačnej pauze spôsobenej zranením vrátil do zostavy Florida Panthers a výrazne sa podieľal na víťazstve svojho tímu v úvodnom zápase 1. kola play off proti Tampa Bay Lightning. Panthers zvíťazili 6:2 a ujali sa vedenia v sérii.
Dvadsaťsedemročný americký útočník si v zápase pripísal tri body za dva góly a jednu asistenciu. Oba presné zásahy zaznamenal v presilovej hre počas druhej tretiny, keď Panthers definitívne zlomili odpor súpera. Tkachuk zároveň zaznamenal štvrtý viacgólový zápas v kariére v play off, čím sa osamostatnil na čele historických klubových štatistík Floridy v tejto kategórii.
Tkachuk nehral od 21. februára, keď si počas turnaja 4 Nations Face-Off privodil zranenie dolnej časti tela. Vynechal 25 zápasov základnej časti. Pred svojím návratom stihol v sezóne odohrať 52 duelov, v ktorých nazbieral 57 bodov (22+35).
„Najdôležitejšie pre mňa bolo byť opäť so spoluhráčmi na ľade,“ povedal Tkachuk po zápase. „Boli to dlhé dva mesiace, ale som rád, že som späť a mohol som prispieť k výhre.“
Florida sa v zápase prezentovala efektivitou. Hoci vyslala na bránku súpera len 16 striel, strelila šesť gólov. Tím využil tri presilovky, pričom práve Tkachuk bol dôležitou postavou všetkých gólových situácií v početnej výhode.
Kapitán Aleksander Barkov odovzdal po zápase puk pre najlepšieho hráča stretnutia práve Tkachukovi. „Vitaj späť,“ poznamenal v šatni. Panthers teraz delí 15 výhier od obhajoby Stanley Cupu, ktorý získali v minulej sezóne.
Tréner Paul Maurice vyzdvihol výkon svojho útočníka aj napriek dlhej absencii. „Na jeho hre to vôbec nebolo vidieť. Pracoval s pukom výborne, bol sebavedomý a energický,“ uviedol kouč.
Počas Tkachukovej absencie zaznamenala Florida výrazný pokles ofenzívnej produkcie – v priemere dosiahla len 2,32 gólu na zápas, čo bol najhorší výkon spomedzi všetkých tímov NHL. Jeho návrat však priniesol okamžitý ofenzívny impulz a Panthers opäť pôsobili nebezpečne pred bránkou súpera.
Na strane domácich sa v zostave predstavil aj slovenský obranca Erik Černák. Tampa Bay inkasovala v oslabení tri góly, hoci počas základnej časti patrila medzi najlepšie tímy v tejto hernej činnosti.
„Súper hral efektívne, ale séria sa nevyhráva v jednom zápase,“ reagoval tréner Lightning Jon Cooper.
Druhý zápas série je na programe v noci zo štvrtka na piatok.
