Chicago Blackhawks momentálne nemá kapitána po tom, čo dlhoročný kapitán Jonathan Toews v lete nepodpísal novú zmluvu. Toews bol kapitánom Chicaga od júla 2008 do apríla tohto roku, keď sa skončila sezóna.
Počas jeho pôsobenia zaznamenali Blackhawks na ľade nevídané úspechy, keď vyhrali tri Stanleyho poháre. Teraz, keď je kapitánske kreslo voľné. Záujem o túto úlohu prejavil obranca Seth Jones.
Je to zaujímavé vyhlásenie 28-ročného zadáka, keďže Blackhawks sú na začiatku veľkej prestavby, ale tento proces sa určite urýchlil vďaka víťazstvu tímu v lotérii, ktoré im umožnilo vybrať si Connora Bedarda z prvého miesta. Je to nepravdepodobné aj vzhľadom na to, že Blackhawks zrejme ponechajú kapitánske miesto voľné, kým Bedard nebude pripravený prevziať túto úlohu o niekoľko rokov.
Situácia ohľadom nového kapitána, môže byť totožná ako v prípade Pittsburghu Penguins pred 18 rokmi, keď svoju kariéru začínal Sidney Crosby. V tom čase bol kapitánom Penguins Mario Lemieux, ktorý však sezónu 2005/2006 nedohral, pretože v polovici sezóny ukončil kariéru. Penguins potom nechali kapitánske miesto neobsadené, až ho v máji 2007 po jeho druhej sezóne v NHL odovzdali Crosbymu.
Vždy som chcel byť kapitánom. Učil som sa od niektorých skvelých lídrov – Shea Weber, Nick Foligno, Jonathan Toews. Bolo by to niečo výnimočné. Chápem, kde sa organizácia nachádza. Sústredím sa na to, aby som išiel a jednoducho hral svoju hru a viedol, či už mám na drese C, A alebo nič. Nemyslím si, že by sa to malo zmeniť.

Jones vstupuje do svojej tretej sezóny v drese Blackhawks, ktorý ho získal 23. júla 2021 z Columbusu Blue Jackets. O päť dní neskôr podpísal s Chicagom osemročný kontrakt na 76 miliónov dolárov.
Na drafte v roku 2013 si ho ako štvrtého v celkovom poradí vybral klub Nashville Predators. Po dvoch sezónach strávených v rozvojovom programe reprezentácie Spojených štátov sa Jones pripojil k tímu Portland Winterhawks vo Western Hockey League (WHL).
V 730 zápasoch NHL v dresoch Nashvillu Predators, Columbusu Blue Jackets a Blackhawks nazbieral 374 bodov (82 gólov, 292 asistencií). V minulej sezóne nazbieral v 72 zápasoch za Chicago 37 kanadských bodov (12 gólov, 25 asistencií).
