Zprávu o tom, že finský trenér Jukka Jalonen přijal po konci svého působení na finské střídačce pozici trenéra italské reprezentace, považovali mnozí za opožděný aprílový žert. Italská federace ledního hokeje však nyní tuto informaci oficiálně potvrdila.
61letý Jalonen je považován za nejúspěšnějšího trenéra finské hokejové reprezentace, pod jeho vedením získali Finové zlato ze šampionátů již v roce 2011 a 2019. Největším úspěchem je však zisk historického zlata na olympijských hrách v Pekingu a triumf na domácím mistrovství světa v Tampere a Helsinkách před dvěma lety. Nyní tento velezkušený finský kouč v rámci dvouleté smlouvy povede italský tým na mistrovství světa v letech 2025 a 2026. Navíc, protože Itálie hostí zimní olympijské hry v roce 2026, bude Jalonen trénovat italský tým na OH v Miláně a Cortině d’Ampezzo. Italský hokej ale pro něj není úplnou neznámou, v sezoně 1998/99 si při svých trenérských začátcích na rok odskočil do Alleghe.
Cíl jeho působení je jasný – návrat do elitní divize MS. O dvě místenky mezi hokejovou smetánku se Itálie porve na přelomu dubna a května s Velkou Británií, Polskem, Rumunskem, Japonskem a Ukrajinou.
Původně přitom bývalého finského kouče chtěla Italská federace pouze jako konzultanta, ale rozhovory pokročily a obě strany měly o projekt národního týmu zájem. Italové usilovali také o to, aby Jalonen během svého působení na střídačce národního týmu nepůsobil v žádném klubu a mohl se tak plně věnovat přípravě. Jedinou výjimkou by bylo působení v NHL, to však sám Fin odmítá.
„Ve smlouvě není žádná jiná možnost než opce NHL, což si myslím, že není příliš pravděpodobné. Ale dal jsem jasně najevo, že jsem loajální a respektuji smlouvu a nebudu brát další evropský klubový trenérský post během smluvního období,“ řekl Jalonen finskému deníku Yle Sport.
Hokej v Itálii není příliš oblíbeným sportem, zájmu se těší zejména v německy mluvící oblasti Jižního Tyrolska. Jalonen bude sídlit mimo tento region ve městě Bolzano, které je považováno za italské hlavní město hokeje. Italský národní tým kolísal mezi elitou mezinárodního ledního hokeje a v roce 2022 sestoupil z nejvyšší divize IIHF do divize IA, to se nyní má finská trenérská legenda pokusit změnit…
