Columbus Blue Jackets mal ťažkú úvodnú noc. Nielenže podľahli Philadelphii Flyers 4:2, ale navyše opäť prišli o hviezdneho obrancu Zacha Werenskiho, ktorý sa zranil. V reakcii na zranenie Blue Jackets povolali do tímu najlepšieho obrancu Davida Jiříčka, ktorý mal začať sezónu v AHL v tíme Cleveland Monsters.
Zach Werenski strávil celú svoju kariéru v tíme Blue Jackets od roku 2015, keď si ho tím vybral v drafte ako ôsmeho hráča v celkovom poradí. Rodák z Michiganu strelil v minulom ročníku tri góly a zaznamenal päť asistencií v prvých 13 zápasoch tímu, než jeho sezónu ukončilo zranenie ramena.
Tentoraz Werenski utrpel vo štvrtkovom domácom zápase proti Philadelphii pomliaždeninu štvorhlavého svalu stehna. Útočník Flyers Garnet Hathaway dostal dvojminútový trest a pokutu 5000 dolárov za to, že Werenskiho v druhej tretine viac ako päť minút pred koncom zápasu zasiahol kolenom. Werenski sa už do zápasu nevrátil a odhaduje sa, že bude chýbať 1 až 2 týždne.
Werenski má s Blue Jackets zmluvu do roku 2028 na 9,583 milióna dolárov. V 416 zápasoch kariéry v tíme Blue Jackets nazbieral 79 gólov a 245 bodov a ďalších 13 bodov v 29 zápasoch play-off.
Na Werenskiho miesto počas jeho rekonvalescencie nastúpi 19-ročný David Jiříček, ktorého práve povolali z Clevelandu Monsters. Columbus si ho vybral v drafte NHL v roku 2022 ako šiesteho v poradí. Jiříček je považovaný za jedného z najlepších mladých perspektívnych hráčov NHL.
Jiříček debutoval v NHL v minulom ročníku, pričom nazbieral dve trestné minúty a päť striel na bránku, čím sa stal druhým najmladším obrancom, ktorý debutoval v NHL v drese Blue Jackets.
Blue Jackets dnes v noci privítajú New York Rangers a v pondelok sa stretnú s Detroitom Red Wings. Pred piatkovým zápasom s Calgary (20. októbra) budú mať niekoľko dní voľna, čo pomôže obmedziť počet zápasov, ktoré Werenski vynechá.
