Winnipeg Jets si poistili služby obrancu Dylana Samberga na ďalšie tri sezóny. Dvadsaťšesťročný americký bek sa vyhol arbitráži a s klubom uzavrel nový kontrakt v celkovej hodnote 17,25 milióna dolárov. Ročne si tak príde na 5, 75 milióna dolárov.
Samberg, ktorý bol obmedzeným voľným hráčom, pomohol v minulej sezóne Jets k zisku Prezidentskej trofeje. V 60 zápasoch základnej časti zaznamenal 20 bodov (6+14), v play-off pridal tri asistencie v trinástich dueloch. Najviac je ale cenený pre jeho defenzívnu hru. Podľa pokročilých štatistík patril uplynulú sezónu k najlepším defenzívnym obrancom v celej lige. Pre Winnipeg tak bolo uzavretie novej zmluvy rovnako dôležité ako pre samotného Samberga.
„Som veľmi rád, že zostávam v tomto tíme,“ povedal Samberg po podpise zmluvy. „Minulý rok sme ukázali našu silu a verím, že s novými posilami môžeme ísť ešte ďalej. Máme tu dobrú skupinu hráčov, sme si blízki. Teším sa na to, ako sa všetci vrátime a dáme sa do práce.“
Sambergovi hrozila arbitráž ak by nepodpísal novú zmluvu do štvrtku. V tomto ohľade nebol u Jets jediný. Arbitráži sa vyhol aj Gabriel Vilardi zmluvou na 6 rokov s ročným platom 7,5 milióna a taktiež Morgan Barron s dvojročnou zmluvou s platom 1,85 milióna dolárov.
Z jedenástich hráčov, ktorí podali žiadosť o arbitráž, ostáva bez kontraktu už len Nick Robertson z Toronta Maple Leafs. Arbitrážne konanie má útočník javorových listov naplánované na 4. august, no dovtedy môže podpísať novú zmluvu a vyhnúť sa tak arbitráži, podobne ako to spravil Samberg, ktorý svoje rozhodnutie neľutuje: „Je to veľká úľava, keď sa nám podarilo dohodnúť pred samotným vypočutím. Teším sa, že môžem zostať v klube, ktorý verí v môj potenciál.“
Podpis Dylana Samberga dáva jasný signál NHL, že silná defenzíva zostane pokope a tím je odhodlaný stavať na predošlej sezóne, ktorá síce neskončila dobre, no stále sa zapísala do histórie ako jedna z najúspešnejších v histórii klubu. Vďaka stabilnému jadru a novým posilám ako je napríklad Jonathan Toews by mal Winnipeg opäť patriť medzi kandidátov na zisk Stanleyho pohára.
