Vedenie Philadelphie Flyers vo štvrtok oznámilo, že John Tortorella končí vo funkcii hlavného trénera. Rozhodnutie prišlo po nevydarenom zápase s Torontom, v ktorom „letci“ utrpeli prehru 2:7. Tím dočasne povedie doterajší asistent Brad Shaw.
Šesťdesiatšesťročný Tortorella trénoval v Pensylvánii už tretí rok. Tím prevzal počas letnej prestávky v júni 2022. Klub vtedy hľadal skúseného kouča, ktorý by dokázal viesť mužstvo počas prestavby. Počas jeho pôsobenia sa však Philadelphia ani raz neprebojovala do play-off. Najbližšie k tomu mala v minulej sezóne, keď jej na druhú divokú kartu chýbali štyri body. V tejto sezóne to so šancami na play-off vyzerá opäť bledo, keďže „letci“ sa aktuálne nachádzajú na poslednom mieste Metropolitnej divízie a predposlednom vo Východnej konferencii. Okrem toho prehrali pod Tortorellom jedenásť z posledných dvanástich duelov. Pohár vody pretiekol po debakli 2:7 v Toronte, na ktorý klub reagoval ukončením pôsobenia skúseného kouča.
„John hral kľúčovú úlohu v našej prestavbe a výrazne pomáhal obnoviť vedomie toho, čo znamená nosiť dres Flyers. Jeho vášeň na striedačke navyše nijako nezaostávala za jeho charitatívnymi počinmi v našej komunite. Napriek tomu som cítil, že pre náš tím bude najlepšie, keď sa posunieme dopredu. Po odchode Tortorellu sa dočasným trénerom stal bývalý asistent Brad Shaw. Vo svojom trénerskom debute na lavičke Flyers zaznamenal hneď víťazstvo 6:4 proti Montrealu, čím ukončil šesťzápasovú sériu prehier.
