Hokejisti Floridy Panthers zvládli dramatické druhé finále Stanleyho pohára, keď v Edmontone zdolali domácich Oilers 5:4 po dvojnásobnom predĺžení. O triumfe hostí rozhodol v 88. minúte skúsený útočník Brad Marchand.
Pre Marchanda to bol druhý presný zásah v zápase. Ten prvý zaznamenal ešte v druhej tretine pri vlastnom oslabení. Zároveň sa stal len druhým hráčom v histórii, ktorý ako 37-ročný a starší skóroval v oboch svojich úvodných dueloch finále Stanleyho pohára. Zaujímavý detail? Jeho posledný gól v oslabení vo finále prišiel presne pred 14 rokmi, keď hral za Boston proti Vancouveru v roku 2011.
Za Panthers sa okrem Marchanda presadili aj Sam Bennett, Seth Jones a Dmitry Kulikov. Bennett otvoril skóre už v druhej minúte zápasu presilovkovým gólom, čím si pripísal svoj 13. gól v play-off a zároveň prekonal rekord NHL v počte gólov na klziskách súperov počas jednej vyraďovacej časti – má ich už 12. Jones a Kulikov sa presadili v prvej a druhej tretine a pomohli Floride v gólovej prestrelke udržať krok s domácimi.
Na strane Edmontonu vynikli viacerí hráči. Connor McDavid nazbieral tri asistencie, pričom najviac zaujala jeho individuálna akcia pri presilovkovom góle Leona Draisaitla na 3:2. McDavid sa elegantne zbavil dvoch hráčov Floridy a pripravil nemeckému útočníkovi ideálnu pozíciu na skórovanie. Evan Bouchard zaznamenal gól a dve asistencie – stal sa prvým obrancom v histórii finále Stanley Cupu, ktorý mal dve trojbodové tretiny v rôznych zápasoch. Corey Perry opäť ukázal, že aj vo veku 40 rokov vie rozhodovať veľké zápasy – len 18 sekúnd pred koncom tretej tretiny dorazil puk za Bobrovského a vyrovnal stav na 4:4. Išlo o najneskorší vyrovnávajúci gól v histórii finále Stanley Cupu.
Brankári mali plné ruky práce. Sergej Bobrovskij si pripísal 42 zákrokov, z toho niekoľko kľúčových v predĺžení, vrátane šance Kasperiho Kapanena. Stuart Skinner na druhej strane kryl 37 striel Panthers.
Zápas priniesol vysoké tempo, množstvo emócií a niekoľko potýčok, ktoré len podčiarkli dôležitosť tejto série. Florida sa po tesnej prehre v prvom zápase dokázala zmobilizovať a z Edmontonu si odváža cenný triumf, čím vyrovnala stav série na 1:1. Oilers prišli o päťzápasovú víťaznú sériu. Séria sa teraz sťahuje na Floridu, kde sa bude hrať tretí duel v pondelok. Panthers majú v tohtoročnom play-off bilanciu 4-3 na domácom ľade a budú sa chcieť zlepšiť, aby mohli využiť momentálny psychologický impulz vo svoj prospech.
