Vzťahy medzi hráčmi v šatni hokejového tímu sú často zložité, no v prípade hviezdnych útočníkov Vancouver Canucks, Eliasa Petterssona a J.T. Millera, sa táto téma stala horúcim predmetom diskusie. Médiá aj fanúšikovia sa zamerali na ich údajne napäté vzťahy, no samotní hráči tvrdia, že je to zbytočné.
J.T. Miller, ktorý je známy svojou emotívnou povahou, priznal už pred dvoma rokmi, že jeho spolupráca s Petterssonom je výzvou. „Sme úplne rozdielni ľudia, ale pracujeme na tom, aby sme sa lepšie spoznali. Nikdy nebudete najlepší priatelia s každým, no je dôležité vedieť spolupracovať na ľade,“ uviedol Miller. Tento postoj však vyzdvihuje jednu vec – obaja hráči si uvedomujú, že ich individuálne vzťahy musia ustúpiť spoločnému cieľu.
Pettersson, ktorý má viac pokojnejšiu povahu, sa v minulosti Millera zastal pred kritikou fanúšikov: „Je to skvelý spoluhráč, ktorý robí všetko pre výhru. Je vášnivý, rovnako ako zvyšok tímu, a jeho emócie to len dokazujú.“ Napriek tomu médiá neprestávajú rozoberať, či je medzi nimi napätie.
Po poslednej sérii otázok od novinárov Pettersson reagoval stručne, no jednoznačne: „Nechápem, prečo ľudia stále niečo vymýšľajú.“ Miller na otázky odpovedal podobne podráždene: „Vy si túto situáciu vytvárate sami. Môžem priviesť Peteyho a môžeme urobiť rozhovor spolu, ak vás to poteší.“
Napriek týmto tvrdeniam je jasné, že obaja hráči aktuálne zápasia nielen s mediálnym tlakom, ale aj s vlastnou formou. Posledné zápasy nepriniesli očakávané výkony – Miller, po návrate do tímu, nazbieral len štyri asistencie v šiestich dueloch, zatiaľ čo Pettersson si v posledných šiestich zápasoch nepripísal ani bod.
Tréner Rick Tocchet však zdôrazňuje, že hlavným cieľom zostáva tímový úspech. „Vždy ide o znak na drese, nie o jednotlivca. Všetci vieme, že na to, aby sme vyhrávali, potrebujeme Millera aj Petterssona,“ povedal Tocchet.
Tím Vancouver Canucks čelí výzvam nielen na ľade, ale aj mimo neho. Hoci médiá stále rozoberajú dynamiku vzťahu medzi Millerom a Petterssonom, tréner aj samotní hráči sa sústreďujú na jediný cieľ – nájsť cestu späť ku konzistentným výkonom a úspechu. Ako ukázala história, aj tí najväčší rivali v tíme môžu spolu dokázať veľké veci, ak dokážu svoje rozdiely odložiť bokom.
