Zdálo se to jako jedno z dalších překvapení letošní vyřazovací části. Devátá Mladá Boleslav vyzvala druhý Hradec Králové a navzdory předpokladům dokázala vyválčit vítězství v prvních dvou zápasech. Jenže Mountfield se v sérii, kterou poznamenala kontroverze okolo branky po odpískání a nedávné hrubé urážky sudích ze strany boleslavského sportovního ředitele Martina Ševce, dokázal nadechnout a sérii otočit.
První třetina jednoznačně patřila domácím. V čase 5:33 poslal v předbrankovém prostoru puk na protější tyč Tomáš Fořt a Julius Junttila poslal bekhendem puk za záda Stanislava Škorvánka. Netrvalo dlouho a ŠKO-ENERGO aréna zahřměla radostí domácích fanoušků znovu. Tentokrát v čase 6:26 ujel Tomáš Mazura a z levého kruhu prostřelil hradeckého gólmana na bližší tyč. Hradec se pak pokusil odpovědět, jenže namísto snížení skóre přišel třetí gól do jejich sítě, když v čase 18:14 dorážel střelu Junttily Dominik Lakatoš.
Do prostředního dějství nastoupili hosté se změnou v brankovišti. Stanislava Škorvánka mezi třemi tyčemi nahradil Filip Novotný. Hradec se nakonec snížení dočkal. Klíma v čase 31:11 poslal zpoza branky puk na Aleše Jergla, který jako první v zápase prostřelil Dominika Furcha. Ve 33. minutě pak mohli hosté snížit na rozdíl jediné branky. McCormack ale z podobné pozice jako Jergl puk do sítě uklidit nedokázal. V čase 38:35 ale snížení přeci jen přišlo. Adam Novotný objel branku a z otočky dokázal propasírovat puk mezi tyčkou a Furchem. Hradec tak uzavíral druhou třetinu se ztrátou jediné branky.
Tak jako první třetina byla v režii domácích, tak třetí třetina patřila hostům. V čase 45:42 srovnal na 3:3 z přesilovky Patrik Miškář a o 10 vteřin později prostřelil Furcha Dávid Mudrák a otočil skóre zápasu. Po čtvrtém inkasovaném gólu se tak, podobně jako dříve na druhé straně, poroučel boleslavský brankář na střídačku a místo něj se vydal hájit domácí branku Jan Růžička. Tomu čisté konto vydrželo necelých 9 minut, když ho v čase 53:28 prostřelil Alex Tamáši. Mladá Boleslav se však nevzdala a v čase 54:07 překonal Filipa Novotného nejprve Alex Lintuniemi a o 58 vteřin později vyrovnával svou druhou trefou v zápase Juliius Junttila.
Zápas tedy v základní hrací době skončil nerozhodně 5:5 a rozhodnout muselo prodloužení. V něm nakonec zvítězili domácí a výhrou 6:5 si tak vynutili sedmý, rozhodující zápas.
