Posledným postupujúcim sa stal New York Islanders a Penguins tak stratilo nádej na postup.
Pittsburgh stratil nádeje na postup po tom, ako prehrali zápas proti trápiacemu sa Chicagu v pomere 2:5 a následne Islanders zvládli svoj zápas proti Montrealu.
Tento neúspech môže mrzieť predovšetým dve najväčšie hviezdy „tučniakov“ Sidneyho Crosbyho a Evgenijho Malkina, ktorí v tejto sezóne nevynechali ani jeden zápas. Pre oboch to bude prvá sezóna bez playoff.
Organizácia Penguins sa však s určitosťou nemá za čo hanbiť. Predviedli jednu z najdlhších sérií sezón, v ktorých postúpili do playoff, naprieč populárnymi športmi v Amerike.
Smutným faktom najmä pre štát Pennsylvánia je však fakt, že po prvýkrát od sezóny 89/90 nebude mať účastníka v playoff NHL. Najbližšie k tomu mala, okrem Pittsburghu, Philadelphia.
