Vo štvrtom zápase série prvého kola mali domáci Maple Leafs povestný nôž na krku. Za stavu 1:2 potrebovali sériu vyrovnať, inak by ich rival Boston získal až tri mečbaly v sérii. Ako to už v posledných rokoch býva v Toronte zvykom, keď najviac treba, tak majú hráči Maple Leafs zviazané ruky.
Do zápasu číslo štyri nastúpil prvýkrát v tohtoročnom playoff William Nylander, ktorý vynechal prvé tri zápasy série kvôli údajným migrénam. Jeho pomoc očakávalo Toronto hlavne na presilovke, ktorá aj napriek hviezdnemu zloženiu v tomto playoff strelila iba jediný gól. Očakávaná pomoc ale neprišla, v prvej tretine nevyužili Maple Leafs dve presilovkové príležitosti a o niekoľko minút otvoril skóre veterán James van Riemsdyk.
V druhej tretine zažilo Toronto veľký kolaps. Skvelou presilovkovou akciou zvýšil skóre Brad Marchand, ktorý prekonal rekord Cama Neelyho v góloch v playoff v drese organizácie Bruins.
