Každoročný NHL draft je pre mladých hráčov najlepšia a najrýchlejšia cesta ako sa dostať do najlepšej ligy sveta. Podaktorí však nemali príležitosť, no nikdy sa nevzdali a tvrdou prácou si vybojovali svoje miesto.
V uplynulej sezóne tvorili nedraftovaní hráči vyše 17% (174 z 1015). Títo hráči sú dôkazom toho, že sa dá presadiť aj bez draftu.
Sergei Bobrovski
34-ročný ruský brankár nebol nikdy draftovaný klubom NHL. Vedenie Philadelphii Flyers povedalo, že ho chceli draftovať v roku 2006, ale nakoniec sa tak nestalo, keďže v tej dobe boli komplikácie s podpismi zmlúv s ruskými hráčmi. Nakoniec sa dočkal keď v roku 2010 podpísal trojročný kontrakt ako voľný hráč práve so spomínanými Flyers. Debut v Amerike mal zažiť na farme tímu Andirondack Phantoms, ktorý v tej dobe pôsobili v AHL. Ale Počas development kempu pred sezónou získal dôveru od trénera a tým si vybojoval svoje miesto na súpiske Flyers.
Na debut v NHL dlho nečakal, keď ho tréner Peter Laviolette postavil do bránkoviska hneď na prvý zápas sezóny 2010/11 proti Pittsburghu Penguins, kde vychytal víťazstvo 3-2 a stal sa hviezdou zápasu. Týmto víťazstvom sa stal najmladším brankárom Flyers, ktorý dokázal vyhrať úvodný zápas novej sezóny. Po výbornej základnej časti, kde vychytal 28 víťazstiev s úspešnosťou 91,5% na tieto úspechy nedokázal nadviazať v play-off.
V júni 2012 bol vymenený do Colombusu za výber v 2. kole draftu 2012. V Columbuse pôsobil až 7 sezón, kde ukazoval svoje kvality. V jeho poslednej sezóne odchytal 72 stretnutí z toho 43 výhier a neuveriteľných 9 čistých kont.
Od roku 2019 je veľkou oporou Floridy Panthers. Uplynulú sezónu si po prvýkrát mohol zdvihnúť Stanlyho pohár nad hlavu, no „panteri“ bohužiaľ prehrali vo finále s hráčmi z Las Vegas.
Zaujímavosť: V NHL pôsobí 107 brankárov, z toho je 22 nedraftovaných, to predstavuje až 20%. Takže môžeme povedať, že každý piaty brankár NHL je nedraftovaný.
Artemi Panarin
31-ročná hviezda New Yorku Rangers taktiež nebola draftovaná v roku 2010 z rovnakého dôvodu ako Bobrovski. Panarin tak začal kariéru v KHL, kde sa ukázal natoľko, že podpísal dvojročnú zmluvu s Chicagom v apríli 2015.
Na svoj prvý gól nečakal dlho, strelil ho vo svojom prvom zápase pri Rangers. Na konci prvej tretiny Panarin svojim gólom vyrovnal stav 1:1, asistenciu si pripísal Patrick Kane, s ktorým pôsobil v druhej formácii a boli považovaní za najlepšiu dvojicu na ľade. Panarin si vo svojej prvej sezóne pripísal neuveriteľných 77 bodov (30+47) v 80 zápasoch. Týmto bol vyhlásený za najlepšieho nováčika.
Od roku 2019 pôsobí v New York Rangers, kde v uplynulej sezóne nazbieral 92 bodov v 82 zápasoch základnej časti. Tesne za ním je Mika Zibanejad s 91 bodmi. Taktiež je Panarin bodovo na prvom mieste pomedzi všetkými nedraftovanými hráčmi.
Mats Zuccarello
35-ročný nórsky útočník nebol draftovaný hlavne kvôli jeho menšej postave, kvôli jeho 173cm a 82kg nebol pre skautov dostatočne dobrý. Po skvelých sezónach v Nórsku, Švédsku a v reprezentácii podpísal ako voľný hráč dvojročnú zmluvu s tímom New York Rangers v lete 2010.
Sezónu začal v tíme Hartford Wolf Pack v AHL. Po zranení Mariána Gáborika v decembri 2010 bol povolaný do Rangers. Stal sa tak siedmim Nórom, ktorý nastúpil v NHL.
Sezóna 2013/14 bola pre skúseného Nóra prelomová, stanovil kariérne bodové maximum a s Rangers sa dostal do finále Stanley Cupu. Vo finále napokon prehrali s Los Angeles Kings 1:4 na zápasy. Zuccarello sa stal prvým Nórom, ktorý odohral finále v NHL. V roku 2014 sa s Rangers dohodol na štvorročnej zmluve v hodnote 18 miliónov dolárov a siaha až do sezóny 2018/19.
V sezóne 2014/15 dopomohol Rangers k zisku Presidents Trophy pre najlepší tím základnej časti. V úvodných zápasoch play-off ho vlastný spoluhráč a kapitán Rangers Ryan McDonagh trafil pukom do hlavy čo mu zapríčinilo otras mozgu. Nasledujúcu sezónu mal však rýchly návrat a stal sa najviac bodujúcim hráčom mužstva.
Od roku 2019 je súčasťou tímu Minnesoty Wild, kde doteraz nastúpil do 278 stretnutí a pripísal si 242 bodov (79+163).
