Toronto Maple Leafs oznámilo, že brankár Matt Murray je na neurčito vyradený a pred sezónou 2023/2024 bude zaradený na dlhodobú rezervu pre zranených.
Je to dosť šokujúce oznámenie, pretože Murray bol zdravý a pripravený hrať, keď Leafs hrali v máji proti Floride v 2. kole play-off. Počas celej tejto série sa neobjavili žiadne správy, ktoré by naznačovali, že Murray utrpel počas tréningu nejaké zranenie, a ani nebolo oznámené, že by niekedy v lete utrpel nejaké zranenie mimo ľadu. Avšak Murrayho história sprevádzaná množstvom zranení a otrasov mozgov bola oprávnenou obavou, najmä po tom, čo začiatkom apríla utrpel jeden z nich.
Tím získal 29-ročného brankára pred minulou sezónou a začal tak rok s dvojicou Matt Murray a Ilya Samsonov ako základným tandemom. Samsonov nakoniec v polovici sezóny prevzal väčšinu štartov v bránke a nastúpil za Maple Leafs aj v play-off.
Murray mal rok náchylný na zranenia, nastúpil len do 24 zápasov a skončil s percentuálnou úspešnosťou zákrokov 0,903 a priemerom 3,01 gólu na zápas.
Dvojnásobný víťaz Stanleyho pohára podpísal v roku 2020 štvorročnú zmluvu s Ottawou Senators v hodnote 6,25 milióna dolárov za sezónu. Po sezóne 2023/2024 sa má stať voľným hráčom.
Samsonov nedávno podpísal ročný kontrakt s Leafs na 3,55 milióna dolárov. Niektorí odborníci predpokladali, že tím by mohol vykúpiť Murrayho zmluvu, aby si po podpise Samsonova uvoľnil miesto pod platovým stropom.
Murrayho si vybral Pittsburgh Penguins v treťom kole (celkovo 83.) draftu 2012. V roku 2016 získal svoj prvý Stanleyho pohár ako prvý brankár Penguins počas play-off po tom, čo nahradil vtedajšiu jednotku Marca-André Fleuryho.
Murray sa počas play-off Stanleyho pohára 2017 delil o bránku s Fleurym a v roku 2017 opäť získal Stanleyho pohár. Murray sa stal prvým brankárom, ktorý ako nováčik získal Stanleyho pohár dvakrát za sebou.
Po vyradení Murrayho sa zdá, že Joseph Woll prevezme úlohu záložného brankára Maple Leafs na plný úväzok. Dvadsaťpäťročný brankár mal v minulom roku v siedmich zápasoch základnej časti bilanciu 6-1-0 s úspešnosťou zákrokov 0,932 percent a priemerom 2,16 gólu na zápas. Po zranení Samsonova prevzal úlohu brankárskej jednotky v play-off a dosiahol bilanciu jedna výhra a dve prehry, s úspešnosťou zákrokov 0,915 a priemerom 2,43 gólu na zápas.
