Predanie martinskej licencie spôsobilo niektorým hráčom Martina nepríjemnú situáciu. Hráči z uplynulého bronzového ročníka sa stali voľnými hráčmi bez klubov. Jedným z nich je aj Pavol Maťovčík.
Dvadsaťjeden ročný šikovný brankár sa postavil medzi tri žrde v play-off, kde ukázal svoj potenciál. V napínavej štvrťfinálovej sérii Tipos SHL proti Gladiátorom z Trnavy vyhrali 4:3 na zápasy a mladý gólman si pripísal aj jedno čisté konto a niekoľkokrát sa stal najužitočnejším hráčom zápasu.
V semifinálovej sérii proti majstrom z Humenného odchytal dva zápasy, hoci oba „rytieri“ prehrali, no Maťovčík podržal tím niekoľkými skvelými zákrokmi a tým vzbudil pozornosť nie len tímov z 1. slovenskej ligy, ale aj z Extraligy.
