Úvod dnešného duelu proti Lotyšsku, za ktoré nastúpilo niekoľko mien známych zo slovenskej extraligy, sa niesol v energickom duchu. Oba tímy si vypracovali niekoľko šancí, no brankári potvrdili svoje kvality. Hralo sa niečo cez šesť minút, keď sa Viliam Čacho dostal do samostatného úniku, ktorý úspešne premenil na gól. Nasledujúce minúty priniesli niekoľko príležitosti pre obe strany, no všetky ostali nevyužité. Brankár Eriks Vitols opäť kapituloval štyridsaťpäť sekúnd pred koncom prvej tretiny, keď po krásnej prihrávke Róberta Lantošiho zakončoval Marek Hrivík do prázdnej bránky.
Začiatok prostrednej časti hry sa niesol v znamení aktivity bronzových medailistov z uplynulých majstrovstiev sveta, no postupom času sa začalo hrať hore-dole. Druhé dejstvo ponúklo vylúčenia, tyčku z hokejky Rihardsa Bukartsa, gólové šance, no samotný gól už nie.
Začiatok poslednej časti hry sa niesol opäť v aktivite jedného tímu, tentokrát však toho slovenského. Už po tridsiatich deviatich sekundách si domáci zahrali presilovku, keď sa na trestnú lavicu porúčal Ralfs Freibergs, no jeho vylúčenie ostalo nepotrestané. Hostia sa taktiež zvládli dostať späť do zápasu. Posledné minúty zápasu sa niesli v znamení Lotyšského tlaku, no bránku kryl skvelý Samuel Hlavaj. Necelých šesť minút pred koncom sa dostal vo vlastnom oslabení do obrovskej šance Kaspars Daugavinš s Rihardsom Bukartsom, no strážca domácej svätyne vytiahol zákrok, aký sa len tak nevidí . Stodvadsaťšesť sekúnd pred koncom zápasu upravil na konečných 3:0 dvojgólový Hrivík, ktorý prekonal Vitolsa strelou od modrej. Záverečný vabank Lotyšov už gól nepriniesol.

„Lotyšsko bolo veľmi ťažkým súperom. Hrali proti nám tvrdo, avšak musím pochváliť chlapcov za to, ako sa s agresívnou hrou Lotyšov vysporiadali,“ komentoval výkon Slovenska tréner Craig Ramsay. Svoj pohľad na dnešný duel poskytol aj Viliam Čacho, autor prvého gólu: „Určite to bol náročnejší zápas ako v stredu, hrali nepríjemný hokej, dohrávali súboje, napádali nás vysoko, čo nám robilo problémy. Myslím si, že sme to zvládli a ubojovali sme to. Dneska sa narobili trošku viac.“
„Pre mňa osobne bolo super hrať v Bratislave, kvôli ľuďom a atmosfére. Vedeli sme, aký majú tím a že majú niektorých hráčov, ktorí vedia byť kľúčovými. Preto sme sa snažili hrať našu hru, čo sa nám nie vždy darilo, avšak nám pomohol v bráne chytajúci Samo Hlavaj. S Robom Lantošim sme to párkrát počas zápasu prekombinovali, ale snažili sme si dovoliť trošku viac. Do najbližších turnajov je super vedieť, že máme na čom stavať,“ pochválil svoj tím kapitán Marek Hrivík.
